I wish I could respond to Zach, above, and persuade him and other frustrated reviewers to study at this place's website or contact them for their tour or speaking schedules. They go to great lengths to heal injured wildlife, from a baby frogs to adult bears, and to educate the public about wildlife and how to keep animals safe. It breaks their hearts, like ours, when an animal can't be saved. To relegate a bird to severe pain from a specific joint injury does not fit any wildlife lover's intention.
I have had the honour of attending two of Open Houses put on by WCV as well as being part of their online community for the past several years. These fine individuals work day in and day out to ensure that every patient that comes through the doors is given the highest quality of care. For some animals this means rehabilitating them for several months, for others it means giving them time to discover proper survival skills hardwired within themselves. Though on some occasions it means that they must make the ultimate gesture of compassion by humanely euthanizing an animal that is suffering or will never regain an appropriate quality of life. May this center always be there to treat species native to Virginia and to continue teaching the world to care for and about wildlife one patient at a time!
As a Wildlife Rehabilitator I rely on The Wildlife Center of Virginia for support all the time!! I could not be nearly as effective without them!! All departments are invaluable!! The Rehab department offers suggestions, advice and large enclosures when I need them. The Veterinary dept is on call 24/7 for support, medical advice and treatment when needed. The Admin department offers support whenever needed as well!! The entire center is dedicated to the care and treatment of wildlife by educating others on the lastest treatments and technology as well as the importance of wildlife conservation.
Simply put, the Wildlife Center of Virginia is awesome! From the caliber of their staff, interns, externs, and volunteers to the care they provide native wildlife and the amazing relationships they build with their supporters they simply have no peer. They are truly compassionate in the diagnosis and care of their patients and equally sorrowful when they have to make the tough decisions to euthanize an animal that cannot be made whole again. They work in a high intensity, fast-paced environment yet still make time for an amazing amount of interaction with their supporters and fans. It was through these interactions that I gained the confidence to become a wildlife rehabilitation myself. Thanks, WCV, for putting me on the path!!
I've been to the open house. I have also brought a baby rabbit that had been injured by a cat. Unfortunately the rabbit had to be euthanized but I understand why it had to be done and I'm just glad that he didnt continue to suffer. I'm also learning a lot by taking the wildlife classes they offer to the public online and look forward to continueing my education about wildlife. I am very interested in becoming a wildlife rehabilitator and they're website was very helpful in pointing me in the right direction. I feel fortunate to live close to such a globally reckonized wildlife rehabilitation center. Thank you so much for everything you do from saving animals to educating the public!
